Trials Update

2008 State Team Selection Trials and Annual Competitions News

2008 ACT 9 Ball ChampionsMatt Harmon & Cindy Blackmore.

Congratulations to Matt and Cindy on their victories.

The ACT 9 Ball Championship was held Saturday 20^th September at The Venue for both the Open and Ladies Championship. Both competitions saw a very high standard of play with the finals tightly contested. The two competitions were run as a double elimination format, with losers in the main knockout draw joining the repecharge knockout draw for a second chance place in the final.

The Ladies tournament was completed first, with Cindy Blackmore responding to an earlier loss to Nicole Welsh with a 6-3 victory in the final over Nicole, giving her a 7^th Ladies Nine Ball Title. On the way to her triumph, Cindy had to defeat a defiant Ann Peffer twice, whilst Nicole overcame Les Otuhouma 5-4 to spoil the birthday girl’s party.

Cindy’s victory is just another feather in her cap as she is easily the most decorated Ladies player since the ACTEBA was inaugurated, and deserves all the congratulations she receives. Well done Cindy.

The Open tournament saw an unfortunate 20 no shows, but this only brought the field closer together, with the remaining 36 contestants eager to get their share of the prize money.

The early rounds of the double elimination event saw some interesting matchups, including Colin Gamble winning 5-3 over team mate Brent Hampton, with both players set to last deep into the draw. Matt Harmon also got the better of Sid Scott 5-1, Tony Aleksovski edged Nicole Welsh 5-4 and Rolf Bandte defeated Rony Sood 5-2. The matchup of the first round was easily top 16 players Matt Power and Mongrel, with Matt coming out on top 5-2.

With players losing their first match joining the repecharge side of the draw, the losing players didn’t find it any easier on the other half. JR defeated Nicole Welsh in a tight match 4-3, Cindy took out Ted Mallowes 4-1 and Steve Phillips marched past Ged Johnston 4-2.

In the main draw, the early giant killer proved to be Andrew Pearce, who did it the hard way with closely fought wins over 4^th seed Ged Johnston 5-4 and Matt Harmon 5-4. Colin Gamble eventually defeated him 6-4 after a win over Brendan Smith. Meanwhilst Steve Woods had taken care of Phil Thorp, Alessandro Nasca and Phil Bailey to set up a quarter final with Colin. Dragan Markovic started well with wins over Cindy, Conrad and Rolf, setting up a quarter final with Pete Smith. Pete had even tougher draw with matchups against Matt Power, Les Otuhouma and James Southwell before he ran into Dragan.

Back to the repecharge side, players advancing there now had to contest with the players who had lost towards the pointy end of the main draw, proving that nine ball is as cruel off the table as it is on the table.

A huge run from Darren O’Connor (including a 4-0 win over Phil Thorp) was brought to a halt by Rolf, also 5-0, whilst Rony took on all comers to squeeze past Glen O’Connell, Alessandro and Tony to reach the final 6 of the repecharge, and effectively the final 7. Rolf had also had a good run, taking out Ted and Darren before hitting a red hot Phil Bailey.

Phil won 6-1 after his loss to Woodsy. Brent Hampton had avenged his early loss to Steve Thomas with wins over Scrol, Les and Glen Thomson before ending Andrew’s great run 6-4. This set up a great battle of Generation Next for the ACT with Brent taking on Phil Bailey in the last 7. Matt was drawn to face Mick Norton, a great match which Matt won 5-3 before fierce opponents in Steve Thomas and James Southwell also fell to the eventual champion.

The main draw had heated up while this was going on, with Colin upsetting the reigning champion Woodsy, 7-2. Dragan didn’t find it so easy, Pete pushing him all the way before Dragan triumphed 7-6. This set up a great Semi Final matchup between Colin and Dragan, but the balls all seemed to roll Dragan’s way as he unexpectedly swept Colin 8-0 to reach the final and a guaranteed prize of over $200.

All this meant was that Woodsy, Pete and Colin joined the repecharge draw, giving Rony, Matt, Phil and Brent more to deal with. Brent didn’t seem fazed by this, however, and got past Phil 6-4 before winning the battle of generations over Pete 7-4. Matt then took on Rony in a fight between two state team members, eventually triumphing 6-3 to set up what was probably the matchup of the day with Steve. The ACT numbers 1 and 2 ranked players hit some of the best nine ball seen all day before Matt grabbed the jump to win 7-4.

Brent then faced off with Matt to meet Colin for the second semi final.

With both players already guaranteed a prize of at least $75, they could still see the big money ahead of them. Brent had played unbelievably all day but succumbed to the experience of Matt, going down 7-3 and finishing in 4^th spot.

Colin kept warm during his layoff from playing, but it seemed Matt’s match practice spelled the difference as Matt completed a relatively easy win, 8-4. Colin finished 3^rd to nab a seed for next year’s tournament and a $75 cheque.

So after 613 frames of nine ball, Dragan Markovic met Matt Harmon in the 2008 ACTEBA Open Nine Ball Championship Final. As Matt had been forced through the repecharge draw after his second match, he had played 82 frames (54/28) to Dragan’s 53 (37/16), but time at the table also equals fatigue. The match, a race to 9, started with the players swapping frames for 2-2 count. Dragan then potted the nine ball on his next break on his way to three straight frames and a 5-2 lead. Matt then rose to the challenge, winning the next 3 frames to level the match at 5-5.

The pair then swapped wins for the next six frames, with Dragan trying to press home an advantage at 6-5, 7-6 and 8-7 to no avail. Matt leveled at 8-8 to send the final into a deciding frame. At this point no player had proven the stronger and luck was beginning to play a huge part as in nine ball, the ball often lands where you least want it. The 17^th frame proved just as tight as both players fought for the runout, finally giving Dragan a difficult double on the nine. A miss handed Matt a hard cut into the corner pocket and the title, along with a $420 cheque.

So 630 frames later (with 99 played by the winner), Matt Harmon emerged victorious as the 2008 ACTEBA Open Nine Ball Champion, proving that he is well past his injury. Matt’s win was his 2^nd Nine Ball title. As always, Matt was a gracious winner and fully deserving of the title. On the way, impressive performances from young guns Dragan and Brent point to a promising future for the ACT, as although it was nine ball, you have to be able to pot to win eight ball as well.

Congratulations to all players for another successful tournament, and once again a big thank you to Rolf and Craig at The Venue for hosting us. Good luck to all teams in next week’s finals.

3 September 2008 - ACTEBA Open Doubles - Final Results

Congratulations to Anthony Chia and Colin Gamble on winning their first Doubles title.

The Final 8 and Top 4 Shootout of the 2008 ACT Open Doubles Title were held over the weekend, with Anthony and Colin taking out their first state title each.

The weekend started at 11am at Coolabar Pool Room with eight pairs all in with an equal shot at snaring the title. Performances over the leadup rounds had indicated that all 16 players were on their game and ready for the day. With 3 rounds of 7 frames each, every frame was valuable.

Round 1 was typically no indication of the final standings, with frame counts too close to call. 1st seeds Anthony & Colin lead the way with singles Top 4 finishers Michael Hazilias & Rony Sood on 5 frames, but 3 pairs were circling just one frame behind, including Gemma Pike & James Southwell in their first appearance in the Final 8.

Peter Penfold (Chippa) & Pete Madden took on all comers with 6 wins in round 2 to leap into 2nd at the final turn, with another huge round of 6 coming from Hazza & Rony to jump into 1st spot. Brent Hampton & Mick Sewell, meanwhile, were keeping in touch just 2 frames back from 4th spot. Ian Stanley & Ted Mallowes hit their strongest round in Round 2, but their 1st and 3rd rounds were not enough to reproduce their comeback heroics from the last two weeks, and a third consecutive playoff was out of reach, finishing 8th for the day.

Phil Bryan & Phil Morton took some of the pain out of their poor start to hit 4 in the 3rd round, finishing in 7th spot, Phil Morton not able to add to his 2000 Doubles Title. Gemma & James could not keep up with the experience of the State Team members ahead of them, but finished a credible 6th.

2nd seeds Dean Welsh & Matt Harmon, however, had flown under the radar for the first two rounds, hitting 4 and 4, but once again left their best for last with 6 in the final round to finish 2nd. The 2005 Champions were obviously keen to avenge their defeat in last year’s final. Hazza & Rony capped a brilliant day with 5 in the last round to grab 1st by 2 frames over Dean & Matt. Chippa & Pete had virtually sealed their spot in the Top 4 already, and notched up the required 3 frames in the last round to nail 3rd.

Brent & Mick made a spirited final charge at Anthony & Colin, but finished one frame short as the early leaders snuck into 4th, with Brent & Mick, one of the surprise packages from the early rounds, finishing an excellent 5th.

The final standings were as follows:

Michael Hazilias & Rony Sood               16/5
Dean Welsh & Matt Harmon                  14/7
Peter Madden & Peter Penfold              13/8
Anthony Chia & Colin Gamble               11/10
Brent Hampton & Mick Sewell                 10/11
Gemma Pike & James Southwell             8/13
Phil Bryan & Phil Morton                         7/14
Ian Stanley & Ted Mallowes                    5/16

With this, the top 4 pairs set themselves for a shootout the next day, a round robin of race to 3, with the top 2 pairs to play off in a race to 5 for the State Title.

Chippa & Pete bolted early on the Sunday, winning their first two matches over Hazza & Rony and Anthony & Colin to all but seal a final berth. Dean & Matt got one up on Hazza & Rony, but a 0-3 loss to Anthony & Colin hurt their for and against.

The final pairs took the tables for last matches with both Hazza & Rony and Anthony & Colin hoping Chippa & Pete would win their 3rd match to keep them in the show. Hazza & Rony took a 3-1 win over Anthony & Colin, but needed 3-0 to match them on for and against. Dean & Matt pushed Chippa & Pete to a 5th frame but succumbed to finish an agonising 1 frame loss behind Anthony & Colin for a spot in the final, alongside Hazza & Rony.

For the second day in a row, Anthony & Colin had squeezed in by one frame. Final standings were:

Despite Chippa & Pete’s dominant form early in the day, when Pete Madden was unstoppable, Anthony & Colin made no contest of the final. Running to a 3-0 lead, Colin had executed two brilliant runouts after Chippa & Pete had broken to grab the title 5-1.

Chippa & Pete had completed a great run with 5 of the last 6 all members of this year’s state team (and the 6th also a multiple state team member). But Anthony & Colin showed the experience when it counted in the final, giving the Stickmen pair a title to avenge their teammate’s loss to Dean in the singles. Dean & Matt and Hazza & Rony once again showed how strong our Open State Team is leading into the nationals.

Well done to all eight pairs on their performance not only this past weekend, but over the entire tournament. Those of us who bowed out in round 1 cannot fathom the standard of eight ball they have had to maintain to reach this last hurdle.

Thank you again to all 76 pairs who competed this year in our most successful doubles tournament to date. Next year I promise to keep the first round groups under 10 players! And a big thank you goes to Rolf & Craig at The Venue, Mikee at The Basement, The Canberra Labor Club in Belconnen, and especially Rob & Vera at Coolabar who hosted our Final 8 and Top 4 shootout. And I can’t forget the adjudicators who give so generously of their time; Glen Thomson, Greg Murphy, Steve Phillips, Les Otuhouma, Jo Lowry, Scrol, Aunty Catherine, Heather Robertson and Ann Peffer. Please if I have forgotten someone I apologise and you can slap me around the head next time you see me.

I encourage all players to go down and have a hit and a beer (or three) at the venues who have supported ACTEBA throughout the Selection Trials this year, as without them we would be unable to run such smooth tournaments. And if you see one of the adjudicators mentioned above, buy them a beer as well, as you can only play as long as these people are there running the day for you.

I look forward to the Nine Ball in three weeks time (20-21 September at The Venue), and to a great finish for the Winter 08 season.

Round One of the 2008 Open Doubles was held this weekend, with some great performances from some pairs, and some unexpected qualifiers in a few groups. The vast number of entrants this year saw almost all groups stretched to 10 pairs, but this didn’t seem to detract from the enjoyment for most pairs. Unfortunately it did make it a long day, but the quality of eight ball didn’t suffer too much later in the day. Amazingly no group saw a playoff, but group 7 did see all four qualifiers finish on exactly the same result. Thank god we didn’t have to have a 4 way play off!

Congratulations to the 28 pairs who qualified for round 2 next weekend, it wasn’t easy to crack the top 4 out of 10, and next week will be a tougher test when the top 8 seeds come in.

Please note that the groups for next weekend will be published on Tuesday night. At this stage I cannot confirm days or groups for any pair.Thank you to all adjudicators this weekend, as well as The Venue, Coolabar, The Basement and The Labor Club for hosting our tournament.

Good luck to all pairs next weekend, and please find attached the results for this weekend.

1 August 2008 - ACTEBA Open Doubles - RD 1

CLICK HERE FOR RD 1 GROUPS

The format this year is as follows:

Total pairs = 76, with top 8 seeded pairs to receive a bye in round 1. (Seedings are calculated from points accrued in the 2006 & 2007 Open Doubles,
and groups are calculated based on these seedings).

Round 1 (9/10 August) – 68 pairs, 5 x groups of 10, 2 x groups of 9. Top 4 in each group qualify for round 2.

Round 2 (16/17 August) – 8 seeded pairs join 28 qualifying pairs in 4 x groups of 9. Top 4 in each group qualify for round 3.

Round 3 (23/24 August) – 2 x groups of 8. Top 4 in each group qualify for the final round of eight.

Round 4 (Top 8 30 Aug/Top 4 31 Aug) – Top 4 from round of eight play Sunday round robin, race to 3, with race to 5 in the final.

ALL ROUNDS ARE A ROUND ROBIN OF THREE ROUNDS ONLY. This means that a group of 10 plays 27 frames each, a group of 9 – 24,
and the final 8 – 21. So in other words, a group of 10 actually plays less frames than a group of 8 in the Singles.

Please be warned that any changes to these groups will be extremely difficult to accommodate. Preferred days of play have been taken directly from your
nomination forms. In addition, preferred days cannot be guaranteed in round 2, and rounds 3 and 4 will be virtually impossible.
That being said, as always I will do whatever I can to help out, just take note in advance if I can’t.

Good luck to all players next weekend.

Please find attached the groups for Round 1 of the Open Singles. Just a few notes on trials for those who haven’t entered before:

1) Play starts at 11am sharp, with tables open from 10.30am for practice. Any player not at the venue by start of play will be given until their first frame is called or will be disqualified. As venues will be using 3 or 4 tables, it is unlikely that any player showing up after 11am will be allowed to play.

2) Rounds take approximately 6 to 7 hours to complete, so be ready to play when each of your frames are called in order to keep the day running smoothly.

3) There will be no breaks for lunch. (A packed lunch is often your best bet).

4) As there are no referees for the day, all rule enquiries or queries on snookers should be directed to the adjudicator.

These groups will also be displayed on the ACTEBA website. If you know any players who do not have an email address, please direct them to the website.

Any queries, please feel free to call me.

The Ladies Doubles event will be held over the weekend of 18 & 19 August and will be held at The Venue as the Coolabar Pool Room, Weston is booked on Saturdays for the Juniors competition and will use 4 tables. With such a large group (12 pairs) we simply cannot run the event with only the remaining 4 tables.

As already mentioned, there are 12 pairs of Ladies and each pair will play each other pair in a Round Robin 3 times single frame. We will endeavour to get through the first 2 Rounds of the Round Robin on Saturday, leaving the 3rd Round and the Finals for Sunday.

At the conclusion of the Round Robin, the top 4 pairs will play off for the Doubles title in a second Round Robin, race to 3 frames, with the top 2 contenders playing off in the Final in a race to 5 frames.

2007 Open Doubles

A couple of weeks ago I circulated a message that the Open Doubles would start on 1-2 September and leave the Fathers Day weekend of 8-9 September free.It has been brought to my attention yesterday that the 2007 Calendar, which has been in circulation since January, cites Fathers Day as 9 September and that Fathers Day is actually on 2 September.

It is therefore necessary to change plans - there will now be no play on the weekend of 1-2 September and Round 1 of the Open Doubles competition will start on the weekend of 8-9 September.

There are 72 pairs entered in the competition which gives us 8 groups of 9 pairs. The groups will be allocated venues and days so that 2 groups will play each day at The Venue, 1 group each day at the Coolabar Pool Room and 1 group each day the Labor Club.

Each pair in a group will play each other pair in the group in a Round Robin 4 times single frame. The top 4 qualifiers in each group will progress to the next Round.

I will circulate updated groups with details of venues, starting times etc shortly.

2007 Open Singles Championship

Well, Woodsie has done it again.

Yesterday Steve Woods retained the ACT Open Singles Championship with a hard fought 9-5 win over long time rival Matt Harmon who had defeated him 7-6 in the earlier Round Robin section.

In the Final, Steve won the opening 2 frames, Matt the third, Steve the fourth, and Matt the 5th and 6th to draw level at 3 frames each. Steve then won the 7th and 8th frames to lead 5-3 and Matt won the 9th and 10th frames to draw level again at 5-5. In the next frame, both players missed crucial shots, but Steve finally sank the black and then blitzed Matt in the next 3 frames to retain the title

Earlier, the top 4 qualifiers for the ACT State Team held a Round Robin to decide who would contest the Final.

Match 1 - Matt Harmon Vs Adam Marlow
Hot new-comer and top qualifier Adam was obviously suffering from the flu and Matt completely dominated the match to win 7-0.

Match 2 – Steve Woods Vs Semisi Naupoto
Steve won the opening frame but Semisi drew ahead 4-1 after playing some of the best pool of his life. In the next frame, Semisi potted the black to supposedly go ahead 5-1 but unfortunately the cue ball collided with one of Steve’s balls and sunk that ball, resulting in the frame win to Steve instead. This seemed to revitalize Steve and he won the next 3 frames to lead 5-4. Semisi evened the score to 5-5 but could not contain Steve and Steve won 7-5.

Match 3 – Adam Marlow Vs Steve Woods
Despite some relief from flu medicine, Adam’s game and form was obviously still affected and Steve ran out an easy winner 7-4.

Match 4 – Matt Harmon Vs Semisi Naupoto
Matt and Semisi exchanged wins in the opening 4 frames to be level at 2 all. Matt then drew ahead to lead 4-2 and frames then alternated until Matt won 7-5.

After the first 4 matches, the two Finalists had been decided and the next 2 matches became dead rubbers.

Match 5 – Adam Marlow Vs Semisi Naupoto
Adam’s medicine had begun to work and Semisi’s game deteriorated after the disappointing losses to Matt and Steve. Adam dominated 7-0.

Match 6 – Matt Harmon Vs Steve Woods
Matt and Steve exchanged wins in the opening two frames and then Steve drew ahead to lead 3-1. Matt then won the next 4 frames with some remarkable potting and cue control to lead 5-3 but Steve countered by winning the next 3 frames to regain the lead 6-5. Matt drew level again and won the crucial last frame to win 7-6.

2007 Open Doubles

Please note that the Open Doubles has been brought forward by 2 weeks so that it doesn’t run into the long October weekend. Also, the school holidays start in September and players will no doubt wish to take their families on holidays, especially the long weekend. Round 1 now starts on the weekend of 1&2 September. Round 2 will all be played on Saturday 8 September to leave Fathers Day on Sunday free. Round 3 will be on the weekend of 15/16 Sept, leaving the last 8 and the Final for the weekend of 22/23 Sept. If anybody has a problem with this please let me know as soon as spossible

Note that as the number of players left in the event gets smaller, it gets harder and harder for me to accommodate everyone’s preferred day of play. Consequently, the “preferred day” will not be taken into account for Round 4 – the groups will be decided purely on the rankings of the remaining players, and the day of play allocated on a “majority” basis.

If you find you have a problem with the allocated day, I will agree to a change provided you can arrange a swap with someone from another group who has the same position in their group as your position in your group. I am happy to provide contact details if requested.

Seeded players – please note that I seriously mucked up the previously published list for the Seeds – somehow I had the days of play reversed. I apologize for the mistake and thank you Phil Thorp for picking that up.

Ladies State Titile - Top 4 Playoff

The 2007 ACT Ladies Singles Championship was finalised this afternoon/evening at Pendo’s Pool Room, Weston.

The rivals for the coveted title were the top 4 qualifiers from last weekend’s Round Robin, in qualifying order, Gemma Pike, Jo Lowry, Nicole Welsh and Lesieli Otuhouma. These 4 players played another Round Robin (a race to 5 frames) with the top 2 fighting it out for the title in a race to 7 frames.

In the Round Robin, Gemma could not sustain her excellent form from last weekend and went down fighting against Jo (3-5) and Nicole (2-5). Lesieli and Nicole both lost 2-5 against an in-form Jo, Lesieli defeated Nicole 5-3 and went down to Gemma 4-5.

At the completion of the Round Robin, standings were:

Jo Lowry: 3 match wins, 15 frames won, 7 frames lost
Lesieli Otuhouma: 1 – 11 – 13
Nicole Welsh: 1 – 10 – 12
Gemma Pike: 1 – 10 – 13

The Final saw Jo take an early lead over Lesieli by winning the first frame and Lesieli countering by winning the second frame. Jo then strung together 5 frames to take a seemingly unassailable lead of 6-1. Lesieli then rallied and strung together 4 frames to trail by only 1 frame. Jo then played a brilliant frame to secure the title with a 7-5 win.

Jo Lowry – ACT Ladies Singles Champion for 2007 – well done and a long-term dream finally come true.

Lesieli, Nicole and Gemma - congratulations on making it this far.
You all played very well but unfortunately struck Jo in peak form.

Best wishes to the four of you (and the rest of the Ladies Team) at the forthcoming National Championships.

Open Doubles - Finals

Congratulations to Steve Woods and Tony Fleming for re-gaining the 2006 Open Doubles Championships. Congratulations also to Matt Power and Brendan Smith for reaching the Final and better luck next year.

As can be seen from the attached results, the last day was a very close contested affair between the first 6 pairs – only 4 frames between 1st and 6th positions. The last two pairs also played very well but missed some crucial shots.

All in all, some excellent pool was played on the weekend, especially on Sunday.

Please check the list below and make sure that your partner knows where and when he/she is playing and that he/she is available to play on the designated day as I do not have email addresses for everybody. Any problems, please ring me as soon as possible – don’t leave it till the last moment.

Also make sure that both you and your partner are at the venue in plenty of time – there were a number of Pairs disqualified last weekend for turning up late.

REMEMBER - If you are not there to start your match when it is called, you will be disqualified.

Good luck to you all

Open Singles Final Results - Steve Woods 2006 State Champion

Good morning all

The final stage of the 2006 Open Singles championship, the Top-4 shoot-out, was held at Pendo’s Pool Room, Weston, on Saturday afternoon.

The initial Round Robin (race to 5 frames) saw Steve Woods win all off his matches (5-2 against Semisi Naupoto, 5-1 against Matt Harmon, and 5-1 against Anthony Chia) to progress to the Final.

The second spot in the Final was battled out between the other 3 players, with Matt Harmon securing the spot with a hard fought 5-4 win over Semisi Naupoto and another battling 5-3 win over Anthony Chia. Anthony defeated Semisi in the remaining match in another close result, a heart-stopping 5-4.

In the Final, Matt won the opening frame. Steve countered by winning the 2nd frame and Matt retaliated with a win in the 3rd frame. Steve then strung together 4 frames in a row before Matt came back to win the next 2 frames. With the score 5-4 in his favor, Steve won the next 2 frames to successfully defend the title he won last year.

Congratulations Steve for winning the title, and congratulations Matt, Anthony and Semisi for their gallant effort for reaching the Top 4.

2004 ACTEBA 8 Ball Champion

1 July 2004

Last night, we had the top 4 players in the ACT playoff for the title of ACT State Champion for 2004. The top 4 (in order of qualifying from the weekend) was Dean Welsh, Wayne Brindley, Kenny Nicol and Matt Harmon. Congratulations should go out to all 4 to making it to this playoff.

After the round robin matches, it was Wayne and Matt that met in the final. In a great match of high standard, Wayne hit the ground running, racing to a 5-1 lead before Matt reeled him in to win the next 6 frames and take the title 7-5. Well done!

This is the 3rd time Matt has been crowned ACT's best, after winning in 2000 as well as last year.
