The 2010 9 Ball Championships will be held on the weekend of 11/12 September at The Maram. We still have 25 places remaining in the 64 player draw for the Opens on Saturday 11, as well as 8 places remaining in the 16 player draw for the Ladies on Sunday 12.
The format is double elimination and the entry fee is $15 so you will get at least two matches of a race to 5 for your entry fee. Who knows, it's nine ball not eight ball so you might even knock off a big name...
Please contact me on 0403 545 619 before Friday 10th if you wish to enter. Note that NO player will be entered without paying the entry fee prior to commencement of play.
Start times will be confirmed in the next few days.

2010 Open Doubles Champions
Dean Welsh & Matt Harmon
Congratulations to Dean & Matt on their 2nd Doubles title as a pair, to go with their 2005 victory. But the going wasn’t always easy, as they had to fight back from an average first round to storm home into the finals.
The weekend began with 12 pairs fighting it out for the four spots in the finals, with last year’s finalists not competing (although runner up Anthony Chia had found a new partner in Stephen Thomas), the defending 3rd and 4th placings of Mongrel & Mick Norton and Michael Hazilias & Rony Sood looked to be favourites along with Dean & Matt and Anthony & Steve. But at this level, no one can be counted out, and backing up from last year’s Top 8 were Alessandro Nasca & Dragan Markovic (who had missed last year’s Top 4 by a playoff), while Top 16 pairs Ben Boyd & Troy Miller (again missing advancement by playoff), Nicole Welsh & Semisi Naupoto and 2008 Runners Up Peter Madden & Peter (Chippa) Penfold were back for another crack. Ian Stanley & Ted Mallowes, Jack Dehm & Matt Connor and Dylan McFawn & Kris Bandte joined my personal wildcards, Kenny Nicol & Richard Bondietti to make up the field. State Trials: 2010 Open Doubles Round 1 Results
[UPDATED: Correct spreadsheet is now linked below.]
This weekend saw the first round of the Open Doubles played at The Maram, Kaleen Bar & Bistro and the Labor Club. With 10 groups of 8 and only the top 3 qualifying in each, it was always going to be cutthroat, but the weekend did see a few surprises.
The dominators this weekend were Bob Sifri & Edmund Chen (17/4), Pete Smith & Shane Smith (15/3), Nicole Welsh & Semisi Naupoto (15/3) and Brent Hampton & Jason Tanaskovic (15/3).
But I have brag about my performance, for the first time in my eight ball trials history, my partner and I were actually leading our group. It doesn’t matter that it was only because we finished our first frame with a win before anyone else, and then we lost our next 3 and wound up 6th, for about two minutes we were the leaders in our group with one frame against everyone else’s zero, so there. (I’ve also been asked to mention that I had two shots on the black in another frame and potted the white on the first visit – happy, Callum & Pat???).
All reports were of a great weekend for everyone, with the days being played in a great spirit and a surprisingly smoothly run day of doubles, rather than the usual bog down we can sometimes get. So credit must go to both the players and adjudicators, especially the rookies, Tolly and Mel (with a nod to the mentor, Scrol).
Groups for next weekend will be out by Tuesday afternoon, but all four groups will be played at The Maram next weekend.
Well played to pairs this weekend and good luck to the pairs for next weekend.

State Trials: 2010 Masters Singles Round 1 Results
Today saw the first round of the 2010 Masters Singles at The Maram. With the field split into 2 groups this year, it would leave the Top 4 from each group to play tomorrow in a battle for the 4 spots in the 2010 ACT Masters Team.
Group One included the defending champion, Tolly Auva’a, three time runner up Ted Mallowes and 2006 runner up Neil Whitbread. But Group Two held the advantage with triple champion Jack Dehm, double champion Rolf Bandte, 2008 champion Kev Harrow and 2007 champion Pete Smith. Despite this, Mongrel entered Group One as the rookie, joining Vince Wood in the “juniors” category. Continue reading "State Trials: 2010 Masters ... »

State Trials: 2010 Masters Singles
The 2010 ACTEBA Masters Singles is scheduled for the weekend of 24/25 July at The Maram. Play begins at 11am both days with tables open from 10.30am.
With 16 entrants again, this year's event will see the field split into two groups of 8, with the top 4 from each group to contest the Top 8 on the Sunday. At the end of Sunday, the Top 2 will contest the final of a race to 5, with the Top 3 being invited to represent the ACT at the 2010 Nationals.
Groups have been allocated on seedings based on the past three years of Masters Singles. The Top 4 seeds have been automatically allocated to the 2009 Top 4 in finishing order, whilst first time participant Mongrel has been granted a wildcard seeding as 5th due to his high Open Ranking. The remaining 11 seeds have been allocated as per results from 2007-2009.

State Trials: 2010 ACTEBA Open Singles Champion
Matt Harmon
Congratulations to Matt on winning his 5th Open Singles Title, in doing so becoming the most decorated Open Singles player in ACTEBA history.
Matt did it the hard way, losing his first match to Michael Hazilias before facing a 1-4 deficit to Sterling Cross and certain elimination. But Matt rallied, winning the last four frames and then his next 3 against Anthony Chia to set up an unlikely finals spot by edging Hazza out by a solitary frame after Matt, Hazza and Anthony all finished on two wins each. Sterling was the unlucky one, but can still celebrate 4th spot in the ACT for the year.
Matt then went on to complete a 9-5 victory over Anthony in the final.
The day was highlighted by the aggressive approach all four players took into each frame, with some unbelievable white ball control displayed by all.

2010 Open Singles Top 16 Statistical Analysis
It was pointed out to me very early that my Top 16 ladder I sent with the email was calculated against 52 frames played instead of the 60 that were actually played. This was because I used last year's primitive spreadsheet that had only 14 players. You'll notice this has been amended since.
Well I've tried to make amends by providing possibly the most detailed statistical analysis of any Eight Ball Tournament anywhere. Yes, I am a stats nerd and I know there are a few poor souls like me out there.

Results: 2010 Open Singles Round 4 and Top 16 Qualifiers
The Open Singles Title is headed for an interesting finish in a fortnight's time (no play on long weekends). After a tight and exciting Round 4, only 7 players from last year's Top 16 qualified this year. While 3 of the 09 Top 4 still remain, 3 of last year's successful ACT Team have already missed out.
While Group 3 had a clear 3 frame gap between 4th and 5th, amazingly Groups 1 & 4 came down to the last frame of the day, including a straight shootout between Dean Welsh and Chippa for 4th. But this was nothing compared to Group 2, which had a 3 way playoff for 4th, eventually won by Mick Norton (who had actually lost his last frame which could have seen through clear).
With a number of players making their first Top 16, as well as the good spread of players qualifying from across the Top 50 rankings, ACT is getting stronger every year. The depth is improving with each Tournament and the Top 16 looks to be an extremely tight event if this weekend's groups are anything to go by.
So come on down to The Maram on the weekend of 19/20 June to see the best of the best battle it out for the 9 places in the State Team. Play will start at 11am both days, with two round robins to be completed day. Not only that, the Top 4 will qualify for the following week's State Title Round Robin. So they all have plenty to play for...
